Welcome to Playing Advantage!

February 01 2010

It is here.

Today is the day we officially launch our website and the inaugural episode of Playing Advantage, the podcast for umpires, by umpires.

I can’t tell you how excited I am that after months of planning and hard work (most of which is new to us) that we can open our virtual doors for business. Let’s talk a little bit about the business we are in.

My colleague and I are both international umpires residing in Canada. We are so passionate about field hockey and umpiring in general that we thought it would be a good idea to talk about it in a way others who share our interest could benefit from. While the casual observer would probably not be interested in officiating, there are those out there in the world who do. Think of this as a jumping off point for a global forum, where we can share our experiences and lessons learned with everybody, not just the umpires in our local leagues.

Not only do we want to share our experiences, we want to share YOUR experiences. Good or bad, we can all learn from them. As anybody who has ever picked up a whistle knows officiating is a thankless job. Most people don’t understand why anyone would want to be an official and yet without us there would be no sport, at least not at a competitive level. Our role is crucial to any game and the best we can hope for is the respect from our peers for a job well done.

I like to think of this site and the podcast as a celebration of our calling. There are many that will toil in the local leagues and never see an international match let alone umpire one. This podcast is for you. If you’re feeling low and don’t wish to continue umpiring I would like you to listen to one of our podcasts and realize that what you are going through is happening to hundreds of others at every level of the game. You are not alone.

We are going to talk about everything we can on the craft of umpiring hockey. Whenever possible we are going to get other perspectives, from players and coaches to umpires from different countries and different levels. We’ll talk about rules and their interpretations as well as skills that can be practiced and techniques to take your game to the next level. Something happen to you last night during a league game? Let us know and we’ll talk about it; if not us someone out there has had to deal with the same situation or will have to in the future. What we do here is for the good of umpiring and ultimately the game itself.

The podcasts can be found here on FHumpires.com, or in the iTunes store. Just type in Playing Advantage and click on the whistle logo. Best part of the advice we impart is it is free; all you have to do is listen.

This is going to be an exciting year for hockey, and with your support it will be a banner year for FHumpires.com.
