For attacking free pushes inside the 5m dotted line:
The free hit is taken from the spot of the foul.
When the Self-Pass is Taken Quickly
Defenders inside the circle and caught within 5m of the self-pass being taken quickly can remain on the circle line and shadow the ball path but cannot tackle until the ball has moved 5m or has been touched by a defender.
Here, the defender who commits the foul has started on the circle line closer than 5m to the spot of the foul. She then steps in to tackle prior to the ball moving 5m and is penalized with a penalty corner.
When The Self-Pass Isn't Taken Immediately
If the self-pass isn't taken quickly and the defenders have the opportunity to move back 5m, they must do so. The umpire should be as proactive as possible to communicate to help avoid “gotcha” calls.
Another way to look at this is we are allowing free hits to proceed exactly as we do in open play. If the quick self-pass is taken and a defender is trapped within the 5m zone, they can’t tackle for 5m or channel the ball carrier away from a good lane; if not, we back them
