So, who loves counting up 5m draws before a free hit enters the circle? No one? But sometimes it has to be done, as we see in this #FeatureFriday clip. Find hundreds more in the fhu3t Clip Library. 🟢🟡🔴🏑
The attacker on the free hit elects to take a self-pass that moves the ball back and forth—every umpire’s worst nightmare.
Let’s do some maths: a stick length is just shy of 1 metre. The free hit starts around 1m outside the circle and the attacker starts on her forehand and draws back and forth more or less a stick length (varying each draw) 4 times before sending the ball 1m into the circle. *As smart people pointed out, the ball must travel 5m before being passed. Although the notion of “travelled” is ambiguous, it doesn't fit with our understanding that the pass can't be part of that.* Without getting out a tape measure, this likely doesn't comply with the rule from a technical standpoint.
We still adhere to the principle that when in doubt, we don’t look for a reason to blow our whistle. However, on close and multiple examinations, this is a time to do so. Do you agree? Why or why not?
