The ball carrier dribbles towards the left sideboards and as he comes into contact, moves his stick to trap the ball against the boards, actively preventing the defender from playing it. This is a form of obstruction specifically defined in indoor hockey which prevents players from using the boards as leverage against their opponents.
The fouling player is caught within 3m of the infringement on the self-pass and correctly stands up with his stick at his waist, allowing the player in possession to dribble past him. Had he influenced the play, this breakdown would have been penalized with at least a penalty corner and possibly a card.
