I think
I'm gonna be, I think I'm going

I think I'm gonna be acting. I'm gonna be me. think
Everything's
me. Everything's trying
to navigate. Oh, I keep on believing, I'm gonna find find my way. With every day, I'm getting older. I feel the weight up on my shoulders. I'm strong enough,
I will rise above. It's all gonna be okay. If I can be anything, I think I'm going to be me. I know gonna be me. I wanna, I think I'm gonna be, I think I'm gonna be. I think I'm gonna be be
me, me, me.
I know
know I gotta be me, me, me. There's nowhere else I wanna go. No one else I'd rather be. I think I'm gonna be, I think I'm gonna be me. I know I gotta be me, me. be me, me, no one else I I think I'm gonna be, I think I'm gonna be think I'm gonna be, I think I'm gonna be me. Check, check.
There is absolutely no reason
why that shouldn't have worked.
No reason at all. I had to
open up, loop back,
and then it worked. Loop back supposed to run in the background all the time.
End of story. Thank you for pointing that out to me. Strong start today. Strong start. That's I'm talking about. Woo. Okay. What Up Wednesday, fHumpires,
Dunn. You're the third team and we have Olympic qualifiers to talk about. There are four tournaments going on right now in all the locations, which is nut bar. Nut bar, because that means at least 12 games a day. Well, no, not at least. Anywhere between four and 12 games.
Cause they're kind of staggering them a bit. There's four games in a location, usually, except in Valencia, because there's the men and the women, they're doing four and two sometimes, and two and four with it. can't even, even,
I can't even, every time I think the FIH has done it. They're like, things cannot get any more bonkers.
They out bonker themselves. This is very bonkers. I'm very glad you're all here. I'll come through and just say hi and make sure everybody is there. Uh, Godders is just back in coaching and very, very cold. I'm sorry to hear that, but so I have
been
occasionally sharing weather
news because
y'all love weather.
And on Friday, there's a list. There's a list of top 10 coldest places on the planet. On any given day, usually Siberia hits in there, uh, Yukon, things that, North Pole. On Friday, Alberta had 10 out of 10 of the cold places.
That's us.
That's me. Sucked. I'm trying not to go outside.
Uh, William's going out a meal. Jonathan's here. Shayne, uh, is bragging. Nobody likes Shayne. Everybody likes Shayne.
but
He's being very rude. Hi, Graham. It's been a really long time since we've seen you. Thanks for stopping in. I appreciate that.
Uh, Stijn is in in
Antwerp.
And uh, Nick, do What Up Wednesdays get more live viewers when the weather in Western Europe is cold? Yes. Yes, we do. There are more people here. COVID was crazy sometimes. Sometimes there were over a 100 people here, which was amazing.
Uh, what do we,
What do we have? I don't know how many viewers we have right now. Somebody will tell me.
30, that's pretty good. That's good. I am not mad. Um, a Chilean cabernet sauvignon Rachel, good to you. Iain is here, uh, live and on time because maybe it's too cold for him to be umpiring because he's umpiring every Wednesday. Uh, Magic Monkey is here. Good to see you again, friend. Uh, FionaTed? I, I, there's no way I'm saying that right.
There's no way. I have to be effing that up. Can you change it to something I can say? I'm just kidding. It's your channel
name. Frank's here. Tom. Samantha, friend.
Friend. You're the
best.
Uh, AJ's here. Good to have you. And yes, we're going to go through all those. Um, and sound effects. Yeah. Okay. So we fixed that. Great.
Do I,
do I look happy? Yes, I am.
I am happy.
Son of a. There we go. Okay. So everybody else is good. Raju is here. Thank you very
much.
And we are to get started. These are our topics. We have a goalkeeper slide tackle from GB in Canada. And because I love that game so much, this other tackle from GB in Canada.
Intentionally raised ball from a hit in midair. New Zealand versus Germany. A skill session. Yes, we're going to do this every Whistle in mouth will be the topic. Uh, a weird ass bully. And interfering with the stick. Pakistan v China. This is going to be a good whirlwind episode. Keep me on task, friends.
Because after we're done, we're going to go into the Discord server, if you are a member. And I have set up special all access watch party. And I don't know what game we're going to
watch.
So it to be obviously a replay because all the live matches will have been completed. The only matches today are men's matches in Valencia, so um, we could do anything that's a few hours old.
Ireland, and Japan would
be too
new, but we could do anything else. So put your requests in the chat or in the server
in
the Olympic qualifier channel and I will take those into account when we're done. On the fly. There we go. That's what's happening. Uh, Innocent, great to have you. Sharn, hey girl, hey! Nice to have you.
been quite
a while
since I've seen you around, but um, I know you busy. Girl, you busy because you're doing cricket things and all that, so. Always nice to have you along. Um, yeah, we're not,
we're not talking about
things that don't have double digits in them. Because
it just doesn't exist.
And there we go.
More talk about snow. Okay, let's get this show on the road, because there are things. There are things. Oh, it's Florian. Great. Oh, Florian! Okay, great. Okay, I'll
I'll lock that
into my brain Sometimes I, I miss,
I forget.
Okay.
Oh, the one that everybody to talk about from GB Canada Canada was there, immediately, now rope the Great Britain as they win the ball back through Hamilton, who drives forward? Soso has to be really careful. The ball is through with Jones, who's chasing it. She gets upended by Harris and I think has hurt herself.
As hooter goes, there's no malice in it. Upended and landed,
Facevert, for, oof.
they're playing here on water based AstroTurf. And the water factor does help because it reduces friction, but trust me, that is going to
Okay, hopefully everybody's had a
look now.
I think I'm coming through. So if that's not the case, oh my goodness. Let me know. I keep having to adjust the
comment size.
Hi. So. Everybody else? Can everybody else hear me? Hi, everyone. Kate? Hi! Great! Well, I look forward to hearing your comments on the replay. Thank you. Um Oh, Murph, you're so good. Let's talk through the principles. Of this particular occasion. Okay? So, there were some
really Interesting,
weird comments on the socials about this particular play, and it's always good to take things back a little bit. Examine the facts. Take it step by step, and that way we're not just reacting emotionally to something that see is obviously a very painful collision, uh, for one of the players involved, and something that we can
really
you know, like we're all feeling the, the groans and the empathy and, oh boy, like, just really, really tough.
So, we're looking at the first that you should do whenever you have the players coming together in a tackle, is look at the
defender.
Don't watch the attacker, watch the defender so that you can get a good view of their actions. We know that goalkeepers are permitted
to slide.
They are permitted to use their body to stop the ball, which means that inside their circle they are not only allowed to, but they're kind of expected to go to ground in order to make goal saving actions.
And so The fact that this goalkeeper is on the ground and is moving towards what is a 50 50 ball, not in the possession of the attacker, is not a surprise to anybody. So, a few people on social media got themselves a little twisted up, thinking this, well, a field player does this, It's a 10 minute yellow, so that's what this should be
here.
That is not how it works. Because players are never allowed to use their body to play ball. So if
they are going to ground, they
are so with a very reckless, as long as they're doing it. Like, they haven't tripped, they haven't, like, slipped, they have intentionally, with control of their body, gone to the ground, and they are in motion, and they cannot control the
momentum. When they have done that, they putting players who are not expecting that motion in incredible danger. So that is why the briefing is very clear. about what penalty should be awarded against a defender who slides, makes body contact with a ball carrier, and takes that player to ground. Ten minute y'all card.
Those three things. Three things. Okay? So get rid of that part. Now what are we going to look for from the goalkeeper?
Are they permitted?
To come out, go to ground, use their body to stop this ball. What wouldn't, and obviously that's rhetorical, the answer is yes. So what are they not permitted do here?
They are
not
permitted play recklessly.
They're not permitted to come
from a long distance, at full speeds, and particularly take a player. Who doesn't have possession of the ball at the time, they're not permitted to miss the ball and, uh, and take a player who's making an attempt to go around them.
They're not permitted to also take the ball and take a player who's intending to go around them. So their motion does not meet the ball. their motion catches the player. As they are going, as they have beaten them,
Do those things apply in
this situation? Is this a dangerous movement of the goalkeeper? Is this something that we wouldn't expect? Really, is, just apply your hockey sense to that. Let's see what you have to say,
And, whoops,
I'm going on the wrong part. Uh, Mr. Durburg, at the time you thought it was a play on, they should be able to make a legit tackle, the attacker's not in control of her movement and actions. And you want to see if your mind's going to changed. Tom, the question for the earlier defender foul, we're going to get to that in a second.
Okay. Was there repetition this type of foul? Has been carded before? This helps with the green yellow decision. This is fourth quarter, last play of the game, Tom. I specifically said that for that reason, to sort of set that stage for you. Okay. Which also would affect if you believe that this is an
offense
by the
goalkeeper.
And I mean, this is to me, like this isn't an
accidental.
Unintentional foul. This is either no foul at all, or recklessness to the result,
and therefore a
stroke. So, if you're going in that direction, you now have some context about where we are in game. Where is the impact of that foul? Also, if you believe that it a foul, you look at the danger element.
Because we RDI. Repetition, danger, impact.
Three.
I'm doing this motion a lot today. Jonathan Lefevre. Your first thought was a
penalty stroke,
but what is it that I
always say? I
don't know. About judging the
skill. The goalkeeper went to ground, stopped, red wasn't watching, and could have jumped. Um, doesn't it look like the goalkeeper's intentionally lifting lifting up?
Look at the side view here, and when the players
And when the player's leg,
When the goalkeeper's leg comes up. Oh, by the way, full disclosure, Has that ever stopped me before? Absolutely not. I also that a
before? Absolutely not. also have a GB passport and all my family is
English, so There you go, just getting that out of the way.
So, here we are,
in this moment. So,
We can all agree that the attacker does not have possession of the ball.
Okay? This is 50 50, so you would expect the goalkeeper to want to close. They're not gonna just stand there stationary. Somebody in a forum said that the briefing or the interpretation, the rule in their areas of the goalkeeper has be stationary. And I'm like, what? No, no, that is simply incorrect. And if that is something that's being promulgated in your area, call me, have the
bosses call me. Cause that got, that's got to get fixed. Cause that's nonsense.
Okay. So here we are. And so here is directly before. The impact.
and then, I mean,
she's trying to get up a little bit, but in this,
she's, she's gotten caught up. Their legs are entangled,
So the motion of the goalkeeper's leg coming up, I believe, is much more a function of this collision.
And the fact that the right leg of the attacker catches her then. her lifting up her leg in any way, shape, or form.
That's how I see it.
Uh, Frank, in real time you would have probably played on. And would have ruled that way. Uh, no, I don't think so. Murph, goalkeeper, has to be Oh, yeah. Watching you
too much, I love it.
Um, yeah, I mean, the attacker went full out, which is
exactly what you'd expect.
You would expect these players go, but that is the risk that you take when you are second to the ball.
Is that you
are you can get hurt. You can hurt yourself. Or, you can hurt your opposition if you've misjudged your ability to get to that ball. Because she is not gonna get that ball before the goalkeeper does.
Okay? You doubt that's on purpose. Um, there you go. Yeah, and she's watching, and she's, yeah, she's trying to do something, but she's, she's
gone in with full commitment.
and it doesn't work out.
That's all it is. Nope.
Yep, that's okay.
Um, so we will, yeah, we'll go to this in a sec. Um, hopefully Steve and I've addressed what I that is there. Um, yeah, no, she, she wouldn't, so I, I think I'm not a
goalkeeper.
said that before
because, you know, I would suck at it.
The goalkeepers in the crowd. You tell me.
What happens when
you have somebody falling on top of you,
right? You need some defense as well.
You can
see Rowan's, uh, blocker comes up as well Cause she's like, Oh my goodness. What's going to happen here,
Could you try
that. Could you try again? Thanks, Siri. You're going to worry about danger to yourself at the same time.
So let's not get too overly
attached to that. Um,
and Gideon agrees with that. Yeah, self preservation. That's what we're talking about there. Magic monkey, same same as the glove. Good. Okay, so, you're seeing that. And Ian's going with the play on Hi, Nick!
Uh, okay,
We'll go for that. And by the way, Sarah, she was playing in the next game.
yes. And yeah, she, she definitely took that one in the face when I saw her face. Oh dear. Uh, looks bad, Graham. Uh, but play on the slide wasn't excessive. Nope. And it was just a misjudgment as ball moves away. There you go. Thank you. What happens somebody falls on you? It tends to hurt, says Murph. There you go. Okay.
So
I think that we're sort of there. We're gonna, I'll go to the poll and just see where everybody's at on that. Remember, you can change your votes
on polls if you really want to, but
the
purpose the Discord poll is to just get you in that mode of, I'm gonna make a decision and then I'm gonna go through the exercise of stepping through
it.
to see how good I am at changing my mind if I need to.
So this is something that I have to work on all the time because I'm watching these games live I'm talking through them with WatchPartyFolk WatchPartyFolk and then I'm, I'm looking at it while I'm clipping it. I see the comments on social media. I try to ignore the comments, but sometimes I
see them. And then I re examine
my thought patterns. Am I I'm sticking to my first decision because that is my psychological bias, because I want to be right, or do I
have it? So
I really try to detach and I play with that idea and I get lots of working that muscle of challenging myself. I do that all the time, and that's why we have these here, because y'all challenge as well, and I appreciate that very much about our, uh, decisions there.
Uh, Shayne, keeper's running into the slide, uh, running into a running attacker, who does not have possession of the ball. play, a high impact, so penalty stroke for you. I'm, I'm surprised, I'm surprised, and I, I just don't, I just don't agree,
because
um, when the attacker doesn't have possession of the ball, you can't expect the goalkeeper to say, okay, I'm gonna let her have it then.
Especially when can beat her to the ball she did, right? What do we expect players do for their own,
for their own safety and
for the safety of others? So if one player decides that they're going to play without proper regard to their own safety or to an opponent, you know, why are we shifting that onus onto, fully onto the goalkeeper here?
Just because they have pads? Is that why we're doing that? We gotta be really, really careful. Yep, Steve's still thinking the same. Um
it is amazing,
it? Oh my god, Steven! Yes, going through the video makes all the difference.
Alright, We'll see you later. Governance meeting, Joel.
My thoughts and sympathies to you, sir. Thoughts and sympathies. Uh, Nick's going with no foul. And, honestly, my watch! Try not to say the watch's name. Uh, Magic Monkey, is it you or do the new Nike colors seem to clash more often with the Keeper shirt colors?
Um, no. No, it wouldn't be that. The umpires have three colored shirts to choose from. And, you know, they would have, they would have been able make this call. And the colors are assigned by the technical team. So, obviously they had no problem with it. Something about the goalkeeper having a helmet, tons of equipment, A stick, glad guards, and kickers seems to distinguish them from the umpire, sufficiently for players at this level.
I'm not a huge fan, but, but,
You know, clearly they went in that direction
for a reason.
Okay, oh, 54 of you! Good to have you. Okay, so let's go back to what, um,
a
couple of you were mentioning. Let's go this. Okay, so Tom here saying, question for the early defender foul was the repetition blah blah blah, um, and yes, let's go back to that because that's part of the poll as well.
If you, when you were watching the, uh, the play in real time, thought, ooh, now that's a breakdown tackle with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Do you want to go back to this foul? Do you to go back to that? Because, even though there's only seconds left, or 5 seconds left by the time this happens, that tackle right there, is there a message that needs to be sent?
Do the players have to understand what is acceptable or not? And given that in a tournament environment, not only do you have the continuity from match to
match to match, this is
That's the first game of the tournament here. Are you also about how players need to change their conduct as they go into the next games?
And knowing that even though we don't have strict rules about multiple cards given out, you know, throughout a tournament, if one player receives two yellow cards in a tournament, the director will look at, they will look at the footage and they will probably have a little,
a little sit down. A little, a little confab with the player and the player's manager and just sort of discuss whether anything else needs to be done. And often these, uh, hearings are just an opportunity for a reminder to be sent about how that player to understand their responsibilities towards integrity of the game and safety of other players, etc, etc. Uh, but sometimes that's where other actions do actually emerge. So, let's see where we're at, and we'll go to the polls.
Um, the green and the purple just seemed a little more unique. Do they have purple? I haven't seen them in purple. Um, don't love the, don't love green umpires at all, even though it's, the turf is blue. Um, I just, I'm green, blue, club, colorblind. So,
So, pretty
close.
And Simon's there. Okay,
let's
have a look at the poll and see where y'all are at. And here we go. We have 63 percent wanting a play on. And I allowed multiple votes, by the way. I should, god, I should have said that. So We can all, I'll add that up, four of you did indicate you wanted to go back to yellow card defender. Nobody voted green. Excellent. At this stage of the game, the impact of that foul, even though was able to play through, the fact that that player was willing to try to stop the momentum going towards in order to get their players in front, reset the defensive structure, all that kind stuff.
That just needs to be Even if nothing else had happened in that game. That's just a yell at that point. And, let's see. Oh, I need to change that and do this so I see the rest of the votes here. Cause y'all are adding your own votes. Good work. Whoever voted for this Um,
no.
Absolutely not. That was a
sarcastic.
That was a joking one, um, for me. yes, okay, so we're adding on a few of
those,
and Stain added that, uh, play on, but come back for the elk heart, okay? It's really, really difficult in the moment. When you've had such a big dis You've played on advantage because you know how important it is to let that play go.
Those attackers need that opportunity because if you stop the play, time is going to run out. Like if you award the free hit, it's the worst decision you can make, even if you're giving a yellow card in that moment. Absolutely not. You're going come back to that later. But then have another monumental decision and you've got an player.
There's so much to deal with in that moment. So realize that there's lot of challenges there. And. Use, if you're on radios, this is a great time to use them and say, I'm coming back to that, get
their number to
your colleague, and then your colleague is going be there. And then when everything else is dealt with, your colleague say.
Hey, remember that time at band camp when said you were going to card that player? You're like, oh yeah, right, and you will go back it. Or they will take it for you, who knows? That's one of the amazing benefits, um, to Oh wait, is my there we go. That's one of the benefits to radios, and according to Murph, goalkeepers don't do fouls. Great work everybody. Okay. Thank you for that, I hope that was helpful, and illu illustrative. Illustrative? What? Illustrative?
Illustrative? Is that an English one?
Uh, Jonathan, leaving aside that it was ten seconds ago.
Here, let me do it on this.
I have a special, I have a special scene for this. If it works
Um, how would I
restart that? As player was injured in normal play, free defense or a bully as neither team had possession.
Okay, so we have what is actually a potential, um, head injury. So that is a time to, to call for a bully. And that is what you would. Restart the play if you have to do that. Okay, can I go back to that offense time actually expires? Absolutely. Absolutely. There's a rule for that. There's a rule for that.
Let's, let's bring up that rule. Oh, hi. That's the wrong camera. Let's put it to this camera. There we go.
And this is indoor, so let's
pull up the outdoor rules.
and
And let's see if I can find
find this.
Here we are. If time expires just before an umpire otherwise would have made decision, umpires are permitted to make that decision immediately after the end of the quarter.
And that includes cards.
So, you absolutely have that option.
Okay,
Okay, let's see, did I go through everything? Excellent. Okay. Announcements, um, I have a few,
I have a few things of note.
I have sellies. I have some flowers to give out. First off, I would like to congratulate Mr. Rich Dunmore, Yellow Team member, for achieving his level 2!
2!
Well done, you. Congratulations. And I look forward to working with you again at EHCO. He's gonna come out and help us, especially on the technical
side.
If you don't know what I'm talking about with the EHCO Trophy and Amsterdam and Uh, Amsterdam hockey and bandy club and happening right next the EHL. So like, you can go watch EHL and then you can come hang out with us and you can some match officiating. Well, get your butt into the server and we will talk about it there because we are going the EHCO trophy again year.
And I can't wait! wait. All right. We are also going to congratulate, uh, Phil Lohagen.
Thank you very much for achieving his level 3 indoor, although he's not a a yellow member. yellow member. I screwed that up. But that's okay, we still love him. him.
There's a lot of love going on, which fantastic. And then the last one, whoops! There's just too many today. Mike McDowell, level 3 indoor, congratulations. Absolutely ecstatic for you, and love that indoor. We have indoor up. Uh, in terms of international coverage, all of the EHF, uh, stuff is happening. We get a week off after the start stop, and then it's it's indoor pandemonium for the next month.
So, if don't like indoor hockey,
it's gonna be tough.
I'll sprinkle in outdoor as much as I
can in the shows. But there's
I'm sure there's gonna be so much to talk about.
And I hope that's
going to be helpful for you. Okay, let's get on to our topic. Shall
we?
This other tackle from the same game.
There were some still photos about this one too.
I'll see you in a bit. Now you in a minute. Penalty corner given to Manus, who's deemed a foul.
There, I thought
she took the ball, but there she takes the boot. Commenting on the initial pickup, but then taking the player out as well. What if I'm going to get dinged for that? I swear. Okay, so just keep in mind that, uh, Canada had already lost their referral at
this point.
So we have what we have, we have the view, the, the, the in time in moment decision. And what we want to talk about are the principles we'd apply. What are we looking for in this moment? What is interesting and what I
think we need to focus on and distinguish are the two different issues of if a player uses their body.
to make a tackle and how
you can't just say well, I got the ball But you have used your body to get the ball and when you use your stick To make a tackle and you get the ball because it's not a foul to use your stick to the ball It is a foul to use your body in order to complete a tackle, correct?
So Sometimes we conflate these things. There's an a lot a lot of logical Mistakes happen because we conflate just a phrase that we know, a cliche we've heard, a truism, a catchy little thing, and then we overgeneralize, and we apply it situations where it's not intended to apply. So, don't make that mistake.
Let's go through the comments and see what y'all have to say about
this.
Um,
Okay,
you're looking for something You're looking for something else, Ruju. I'm not sure exactly where this is from, but
maybe we'll talk about this,
uh, another time so I can stay focused on what we're doing here. Uh, for Mareets, he sees a free hit defense. Uh, hooking, Jonathan, or whatever you want to call it in field hockey, PC, deliberately pulled the stick to trip the player.
Uh, Spencer says the opposite. Safe and clean tackle, unintentional hook of the stick to the attacker's play on. Okay, so Jonathan, I think what you're looking for here is you're looking for basically
an interference,
and I think we're coming back to Well, you can, you can look at 9 2 as, you know, not using your stick a dangerous way.
There's one.
Um, let's just see if there's some, sorry, I'm,
as
I, as I read and just make sure, it's always good to read the rules and make sure that you're not seeing something.
Or, sorry, that you're, you're
not imagining what you know about the rules, but you're actually seeing what's there. Okay, so not raised, it's not any of those,
and I believe,
sorry, my screen isn't updating, and it's, it's gotta be here, and it's about using their stick in a
dangerous way.
Uh, you can't obstruct by using stick, we've got that in 9 12 of course, and you can't touch, handle, or interfere with other players.
Or their sticks, or their clothing. Okay, so, interference. Basically. Which is weird. That sounds like we're talking about ice hockey when this happens. So, do not like. Do not like us talking about ice hockey. Um, let's see. Tabsy wants us to play on. The red player walks into the stick.
Okay, I really like how Moritz
has phrased this.
Uh, because we're talking about why the contact
happened.
So it's very clear that there's a hooking of, you know, the stick
hooks the foot.
We do know but why does it happen? And it doesn't happen in a way that is the fault
of. the defending player. We always
have to look at the cause, not just the outcome.
For Durburg,
it's a great stick on ball. Stick doesn't promote itself to play to the red Red player trips herself off. That's how you saw it initially.
Uh, Stain wants a free hit defense. Attacker takes the stick of the defender along. Play on for Rajou. Mike, play on for Nick. Yeah, it's all It's all unintentional there, there's, there's no, there's no sort of, you know, ripping motion that the player's momentum is fully caught in the stick and,
you know, if anything the defender
is going to try to, to disentangle herself she wants to get at the ball she has cleanly One in this situation.
Maybe unintentional, still a foul. What foul? Okay, because what you have to be judging here, Ruth, is that defender caused that contact. Are they entitled to put their stick in position? Would you expect them to in order to try to make that tackle? Puts their stick down in the reverse
and
and then takes the ball and starts moving the stick.
You know, at the ball, and then what happens? The attacker has now been dispossessed. They were hoping that they were going to be jumping over the stick with the ball, but, or jumping to side, but now They don't have the ball anymore for Gods, it's a great tackle. Lift a stick look, looks, it does look worse in slow motion as everything does. Okay. Uh, Gideon don't think she deliberately pulled the stick to trip the attacker. It's really tough when you have your, your stick hooked on something to not make worse. like the, the, the, the, the only thing that you could think of doing is dropping your stick to absolutely ensure, but even if you
drop
your stick, your stick can get pulled away.
And then. hurt somebody else. Like, it's just not a great situation.
So, what else do you do? Um, she was looking to go to the stick sided offender, i. e. to her right. That's why she direction. Yeah, but now she's She
doesn't
have the ball, so, so she is moved in a way that doesn't anticipate that there's going to be a successful stick tackle there, right?
Um, and so that's, that's what's interesting here, Tabsy, is that, you know, this wasn't, um,
Let's
see if we can move my big melon out of the way. For just a hot here. I have to unlock this.
That's 2
It's 2 0 Canada. Let me this again. Let me go back to the full And my head's still not gone right away. Right, so cued for 8 8 and a half.
That's not the only factor we're looking important. important. Penalty corner, give it to him first. To look at, okay, so we're late in the game, and
so
impact, there's definitely big impact. This is a one on one. If this defender loses this ball, this is a one on one. Howard goes in, on her own, on the
goalkeeper.
Danger. Players taking the ground. So if this is a reckless as to the result foul, I would fully expect there to be a big personal penalty with this.
a yellow card. So
that's something to piece together for yourself in other scenarios.
Where are we? If this happens and I do a breakdown foul, what am I going to apply?
What's my criterion, repetition, danger, impact,
as to whether
I'm going to add a personal penalty to this.
So it was the defender's leg, then the defender is causing the foul. I would say yes, because a leg isn't allowed to make tackle. A leg isn't entitled to block space, but a stick is,
right? Do you see the difference there?
Like, this is the only way that the defender could make. A clean tackle, for sure.
Uh,
Alistair, we have a great view of the incident, but the umpire sees it from the other side with an obstructive view. Absolutely. Like, absolutely, we're not This is about us applying so that when we make this decision in the future, we do it, uh, in the most correct way can.
We're never going to have exactly the same facts. We're never going to be in
the same Exact same position. We're never going to have the same pace and, and, you know, the ball all the, everything's always different. I'm trying to tease out the so you know what to do in the next situation.
Okay.
Um,
I, I just, I, I think that there, it just have been an unsighted moment,
is all because of where the players were.
Not sure.
Uh, hi Simon.
good to see you.
Just back from Replay Squad for the Plants. You know what you can do, Simon, is you can, like, pull the, pull the, pull the, um, hmm,
Player thingy. I know what the word is,
it's just not coming to my lips. Pull it all the way to the left, and then put me on two times speed, and then watch the whole thing. And then you will catch up to the live stream. That's what I do all the
time. Oh,
are you leading me on? Are you leading me on Tabsy? Um, you were surprised there was no card.
Yeah. Which is just sort of fine. Oh, I missed what happened.
There it
was. I
just saw the score. Why isn't anybody telling me what the score is? Um, do, do, do.
okay,
Rupert, you get to give me the update. Rupert's from Ireland, by the way, if you weren't sure. Let's go to the poll, see where we're at. Having exercised your own thought That's all we're doing here. Okay. We've
got votes, or 57 percent are wanting play on, oh no, sorry, I did this last week, I did this last
week.
learning from my mistakes. That's something that we can all do. So we've got 20 percent who want the penalty corner. Um, Oh, this is not working out very well. I think people are changing their votes. 20 percent
want a penalty corner and a card. Okay. So that's, sorry, 15, percent of you are looking for a recklessness the result foul.
And then we've
got
48 percent of you with play on. And then we have, I don't know, we have free head attack from Alex.
I guess, I guess that's possible. I guess that,
that that's possible. Um,
Fraser is doing what Fraser's do, uh, with this. Um, remind player isn't Olympic diving qualification. No, she did not dive. There's no way I'm not taking that nonsense because she did not have a choice. Like she was, she was making her movement.
She fully committed to it. And then her foot, you know, she stepped into that stick and that's just what happened. So no, thank you for your participation. Appreciate that. Well done, everybody. Let's go on to our next one. We're making okay time here, really, but this is where it's all gonna go to poop. Oh, what a touch that is! Oh, no, no, no! Oh, no! well. I genuinely, Shaun Evers must have seen something in there, Germany. Here we see the pass. Little touch, he goes. Now why is that? I no idea why that's a foul. Hi.
Pie. So this is going to be the worst, but we need to talk about it. And I want to start off just saying that I. I had, I, I honestly, like, I LOL emojied, uh, Mace and, uh, Chris's reaction
to the play because
it really was, it was funny. And every person with a
hockey heart
is saying the same thing. No! We want that to go!
Because it's beautiful skill, it's absolutely beautiful skill, exciting, vibrant, it's everything that we want in
this game.
And it's safe. However, we do have the issue. The issue is to whether this is an intentionally raised
hit
of a ball
that just happens be out of midair. So, tell me what you think.
Ireland
won. There we go.
Oh, Gideon, for the last one, um, that is correct. A self referral can't be used for a penalty decision, only for strokes and goals. So the umpire can't go back.
No.
Yeah. Raising a
raised ball.
It's with it. Right. So, Jonathan, I'm glad you asked
because Let's see.
Where is it? Dangerous. Here it is. You know what? I really want this to look very clear, so I'm going to change the color to make sure that it's 9 nine nine nine nine
Players must not intentionally raise the ball from a hit except
for a shot
at
goal
That's why. So now that we've cleared that up,
let's
look at a couple other definitions as well. Let's look at a definition of a hit for funsies.
For funsies! And, sorry, this is taking me a while. Striking or slapping the ball
using a swinging movement of the stick towards the ball, okay? That is the definition of a hit.
What's also interesting is that we have a push,
moving the ball along the ground. Scoop, raising the ball off the ground by placing the head of the stick
Under the ball. So the other methods of playing the ball include that the ball starts on the ground.
A hit does not. Ergo, you would say that the hit then,
a hit could
occur.
in air.
I am being very
cagey with my wording for a very good reason. You feel it. You hate that he
hit it.
Okay, let's. Let's just take a hot minute to look at the actual skill here, because
when we break
break it down and let's see if I can get to the frame rates are poop. They are 25 frames per second. So it's going to be very difficult now.
Oops. When we are judging whether a ball is hit hit in indoor, for example, the ball is for example, the ball is on the ground a backswing.
and there is a backswing, a movement of the stick away
from the ball to a certain distance and then it moves back towards the ball and the ball is contacted and then is moved away. That could be a push if there is contact of the ball with the stick for anything but a
momentary period of time to a judge that in
indoor and
if
you extend that to outdoor when you're looking at whether a first shot on goal is a hit or not.
The guidance, the, uh, the interpretation, the briefing really, which isn't formally in any briefing, but it's, it's our common shared understanding that's been spread around the community is that about more than 50 centimeters is definitely going to is going to be a
hit.
But we use the ground to help us judge where that is. And the ball is usually stationary. And I have a few in my indoor I talk about how the ball could
be,
Um, on its way to a player from one angle, and then they backswing, and then they deflect. They deflect the ball up the boards, for example, because of the backswing that's in order to change the direction of the ball. Or, like, one of the hits that we reviewed a few ago,
I actually actually asked about it by, Jens, in, on Instagram DMs.
DMs.
He sent me the video that we had reviewed, I can't remember the two Dutch hooped klasse teams, somebody remind me, but
the ball is
coming at a different direction, And so
Diagnosing
that distance, figuring out how far and where that 50 centimeters come from is difficult.
Now, do that when the ball's in mid air, and it's coming from a different direction. How do you know what 50 centimetres is? Because here, as the ball is moving, Sorry, that was a very long pause. But I didn't want to lose my place. even point with the ball. Is that 50 centimeters away? Did the backswing start earlier? Did it not? Has the backswing even started at this point with how many frames per second we have? And what I really get from this is also
the
flick of the wrist here. Okay, so there
is
more of
a
an, a
There's a chance
here. I'm not going to say definitively because I don't think the video is, is Really showing us, but I think there's chance that the ball was in contact the stick for more of a period of time, which would indicate me that instead of it being an
impact point and the ball
springing off, that it is akin to a push.
It's akin to a
scoop that just didn't happen to start on the ground. We've seen players at the top levels here being able to receive the ball 3D, have the ball on their stick, or maybe they brought it up to Uh, to hold on
their stick,
and then the aerial ball, they flick it from there. Which is obviously completely crazy,
but a skill that they can execute.
But does that mean
that you have to have that extended contact in order
to
take a ball, in order to play a ball that's in the air to also play it further into the air?
Is that what we're, what we're expecting?
Is that
what we need in order for this rule not to get invoked, is my question.
Let's
see what y'all have to say. If it's not intentional, then are you judging the Yeah, we do. We do. Absolutely when we're using this
rule.
And it's not easy, but when a There's a difference between misplaying the ball
and hitting it And misplaying the ball with a hit and gaining such a significant advantage that we
say
basically it's a recklessness to the result. And that normally very skilled players who then gain the benefit of being able to clear the ball over players heads because they've mishit it. Well, that's not good enough at certain levels skill. At other levels of skill, we're yeah, that's fine as long as it's safe. You don't have that kind of control.
Uh, technically the right decision for Ian. Definition hit, we did that. Intentionally raised hit, which was not a shot at goal, rule looks a bit daft. Not what it was intended for, exactly. So, Godders and I, as being some the senior members of this community, we know that this rule was put into place to stop players from chipping the ball from the ground and hitting it hard and high over the entire field of players dropping 70 meters away for a breakaway on
goal.
And
it,
because it, it, it came into vogue where these, these golf shots were occurring. Obviously many of these shots were going to be mishit and misplayed and would be extremely dangerous. So the rules committee does what the rules committee sometimes, you know, they, they, they committed this committee and they outlawed that specific.
Stroke. Just like they've done with the forehand edge hits. Just like a lot of people were calling for with the reverse tomahawk. Because sometimes it was highly dangerous. Let's ban it
completely.
There are significant risks to the quality of our game. And the way in which we as umpires are then charged to make technical decisions that make no freaking
sense.
It's in the context of hockey
because of the rules says so. I've said over and over and over again, on these streams, that the rules of hockey are beautiful when they are understandable. Everything about our rules, including sideline and backline, you know, out of bounds play
is about safety. As a side note, indoor gets into trouble with the whole trapping thing, because that has nothing to do with safety.
It's got everything to do with the aesthetics of
the game.
That it looks ugly and that's why it's so weird and it's so hard to impose you're like, why would I do this? Where is the, you know, you get it because the ball isn't moving, but like, but why? But why? Because you're not keeping anybody safe.
This rule is like that now
because it wasn't put in place when players were literally volleying the ball on a
regular basis. Dribbling the ball 3D, passing to each other.
In 3D space. And so going back to Rupert's comment I hate that hit it.
I don't
actually think this was a hit.
I think it
looked like a hit until you examine it carefully and then you realize actually if that had happened on the ground, I think that would have been a push.
I think that's a scoop.
And it's a shame since
Samantha, it would have been beautiful play. Yeah, I mean, he has full control over what he's doing, so reckless as to the result, intentional, whatever. He didn't intend commit a foul. That's not what we're judging it on. Was he in full control of his actions? Did he make that decision?
That's what I think.
As the ump, you have to have the guts to make call. And, um, and let's see, the correct call was made, but we can discuss that the rule intended that these kind of safe hits. Yeah.
absolutely, and I
think one of the things that you want to
understand in
this if you're like, Oh, I wish would have let that go. We do, but look at what the situation was. 2 2, third quarter, and because the ball gets brought
down.
the sliding door is shut. Because the call was we have no idea what could happened. What would have been the result? Has Sean just said, Yeah, I don't really feel like calling this. If he's convinced it's a
hit
And he doesn't want to call it because of the spirit of the game
and turns into a one on one plus the goalkeeper situation.
it's successful, a penalty stroke arises from it.
a goal, a big play. That decision is not reviewable. So he's gotta make the call that he feels. In that moment, and the best way to shut the door of the controversy to make it the second. So I totally understand that.
Totally.
And Ruth, I mean that, I get it. And people Say that all the time, they get all freaked out
and say, Oh my God, all the players are gonna do this and going to be chaos and blah, blah, blah. We get a little chicken little about this stuff. I remember when the, uh, playing the ball by the shoulder rule was taken out the game. And we even did this for a whole year in my local area. We refused to implement the rule because it was like, oh my god,
going to be, you know, everybody's going to do unsafe
things.
And I think we need to be a little bit more understanding. And respectful of players. Yeah, there's some idiots out there. Yeah, there's some people who are going to try that
they shouldn't. They're going to
accidentally do
things wrong. But the only way that players can build skill is to try things.
They have to
take chances.
They have to take risks. They have to be willing to make mistakes. Just as we have to be willing to go out there and make mistakes.
So, I don't want to turn into a, you know, a whole thing like that. Because, it's,
it's
a part of the game. It's how we evolve. If somebody hadn't tried to reverse Tomahawk and royally messed it up Or done a hundred of them in a match, and then, or a hundred of them in practice, and then go a
match and then,
uh, mess it up. And like, ah, oh my god, that was really scary. Like, that to be part of the process.
And that's part of the
and the risk of our
game.
And yeah, you start getting into a whole thing where start judging dribbles. Was the stick within 50 centimeters when it was going, when it was dribbling back and forth, and, and I've heard umpires say if the dribble too far, that's a
hit.
Like, uh, I'm just a keepy as you guys sometimes call it, that if it's more than 50 centimeters, it should be deemed a hit.
We don't No, that
at we don't want that. at all. Yes.
An aerial
push, an aerial push.
So it's something that we can think about as a hockey community. And our voices are heard. I know it doesn't feel that way. It feels like it's super quiet and, you know, there, there's an ivory tower somewhere and they're all locked up there and nobody listens us, but they do.
They watch these games. They know there are some really good people on that rules committee who I believe are trying their best, but they've got a kind of a mess.
Of a lot of things, of little piecemeal changes that have been, uh, that have been added without understanding the entire context. And sometimes when you're just trying to fix a few problems and putting out fires, you're not systemically dealing with what the rules mean as a whole.
Aerial deflection.
there you go. Um, let's see. We don't have a for a ball balancing on a stick that is moved off the stick and into air. No, we don't. We just don't.
I'm not sure what, uh, Mike was agreeing with
Steve there, but I don't know. Maybe 2025. Maybe. When is a hit a hit? Hands apart. No, no, no, no, no. That's not it. It's not the hands, not the hands.
Had the ball been on the ground, which it wasn't, that stick movement
would have been a flick or scoop.
Therefore, it should be fine.
It should be fine.
Uh, ball played in the air in a controlled manner. I mean, basically, we're just, we just kind of want that rule to be taken away, but how we make sure that the chip hit, or do we let the chip hit back in? I don't know. But how do we make sure the chip hit doesn't Because we could say, well, as long as it's safe, all these things are
fine,
But do we still prohibit the chip hit, but we allow the mid air hit? And then are people going to intentionally put the ball up in the air so they can cricket bat it, you know, more easily than what the skill of an aerial flick requires?
I know I one time the ball out of the air higher with more control
and with a lot better execution
than I could aerial the ball
because I can't get low enough.
And that requires a different kind of strength,
and better skills. Skills that I
don't have. Yeah, exactly,
The Tappy Tappy. Keepy Yuppy.
Why, Why do we have such immature names for
these things? Blech. That's gross.
It does make it a challenge. Do we take the definition definitively?
When you're umpiring an Olympic qualifier, and you've got a tie game in front of you, are you gonna
take the definition definitively? Right? I
want you to keep that in mind. That's not a situation we're gonna be in. That was situation I used to be in when I was an FH umpire, but not
anymore. We are not in that position.
But I want you to just, you know, think about that when you're thinking what this umpire has to deal with in the moment. It's not frickin easy. Uh, don't care. Don't care. That is not anywhere, anywhere the definition of a hit.
Okay?
I, I don't know that, like, a lot of people pull this out.
Oh,
well the hands are apart so it can't be a hit.
Oh, the hands are together so it
has
to
a hit. You could push the ball with your hands together. It probably wouldn't be as good. It would be interesting skill, but it absolutely could be a push because it's about the stick moving away from the ball, moving back to the ball in such a way that the ball then springs off that stick. That's the difference.
Oh, I, I hate it when people start Dumbledore's army on one. If the pass had been 50 or 60 meters ahead instead 15, would we still be okay with it?
Well, um,
If I remember, I will put up
a little invitation to watch another segment that I did where the, um, there was a clearance out of a circle
with a full fledged,
you know, cricket bat Um, and play was allowed to continue and a lot of people said, well, that's clearly a hit.
And that was a full blooded swing. was nothing like that. Trust me. It was still
completely safe.
Completely safe. It was ridiculous how safe it was, given what happened. So, focus on 9 7 for the best argument to allow this
as a skill.
It's
not a hit. And not dangerous. Some defensive clearances akin to cricket baseball shot have been allowed. Yep. But using this would have been penalty corner. At least. Yeah.
And the hit couldn't
be reviewed because it was outside 23. Right. Sorry, I'm catching up to your comments. So if I, if I answered your Your comment later because of the delay and all that sort thing. My apologies. Um,
you
don't like those as a short path to then allowing teams to lift it to themselves and then undertake that skill.
Yeah. Anything but a
hit, please.
Um, Um,
so Dave, you
can take the marker and you can scroll back because right at beginning I reviewed it, why it's not play on
or
why it wasn't called as play on here. I think there's a strong argument that you could have played on anyway, just from the isolated facts right here. UM Decisional Final left back, to the assistant.
we're talking to
you too. Jonathan, your son, Ollie, who's a real hockey player is just explaining to you. Swing motion more 20 cent it's not 20, it's 50. 20 centimeters is really small. 50 is pretty but 20 is exceptionally small. So, that's not correct. Jonathan, your son Ollie may be really, really smart, but I've already explained it.
So,
listen to
Oh, poll? How we doing? 118. Oh boy.
And let me change
Oh.
Oh, 79 percent of you want this as a play on. I get it. Murph is struggling to think of
something funny,
change the guidance to allow it, says Rachel. One of you wants the free hit defense. Yeah, I get it.
I get it.
And every umpire is in this position, trying to figure it out. I really hope that after Paris, we have an examination of this.
Because that be good. Okay! Oh, wait.
Okay, we'll do this and then I'll do Um, 13 stuff
after that. So little that I want to do every week, cause last week it worked out pretty well,
uh, and I'm going to call it the skill session, but
let's workshop it. Not sure. I wanted to talk a little bit and
have a little discussion about the concept of holding your whistle in your mouth.
Because we had a really good discussion in the server in Ask FHU, if you are not a member of the server, um, um. Uh, um, welcome back Simon, by the way. Welcome back, plants.
About
why you would hold your whistle in your mouth,
why you wouldn't, and when, and all those What are the considerations that you want to
keep in mind?
There are some umpire coaches out there who are my vintage and older. And we grew up in the era where we had our umpire coaches and telling us to never hold our whistle in our mouth.
Because we needed to be able to speak, and it looked like we had a
dummy.
And it was recently put on one of my
um, Facebook page posts
that you're sucking on a lollipop
out there, and I deleted the
comment
Because it's just not
valid anymore.
Guess what, friends? The game has changed. The game completely different.
It is extremely fast. It is, I mean, I couldn't even mathematically guesstimate how fast it is compared to before the era of the self pass. And but the way that we determine advantage has completely changed. The way that focus on our whistle timing has completely changed. And the way that things are more dangerous, potentially, in the
circle, and the crucial, crucial part that our timing has to play in all that things means that there are times when I believe, and I coach, and I strongly recommend everyone proactively
proactively
put their whistle in their mouth Because it will aid in their whistle timing.
These These
are situations where you aren't gonna have time to talk to the players.
because things are happening that fast.
If you have time to
talk to the players,
you shouldn't have your whistle in your
mouth because things aren't happening that fast. When are
things happening that fast? When the play is in your circle is a great time, okay?
When the penalty corner has been injected, fantastic time. Which is also in the circle, but okay, because you, you are going to need make some vital calls in that moment. And the whistle is there. You have your hands free to do your gestures, to call advantage, to play on. to say, Hey, there's the ball, to do all those important things.
And by the way, you can also say single words and even phrases around your whistle. And is there the chance that could pop your whistle out of your mouth? You could drop it? Yes, but I see umpires dropping their whistles more often because they're effing around with their long lanyards and all the other of bullshit like
that.
So that isn't the biggest risk. Accidentally blowing a whistle, that's not a
thing. You have
to consciously put your lips around
the whistle in order
for any real sound to come out. You might get a little,
ain't nobody hearing that
except you. And it's not about you. It's about what everybody else can hear. Every, every umpire that I've coached, and this something that I started using in my own game and now advocate it to other people. Every umpire who's tried it has said, wow, my whistle timing has gotten way better in key situations. When you see players coming together, 50 50 ball. Put your damn whistle in your mouth.
Okay, because you're gonna have a decision to make. There's to be a something dangerous, some obstruction, some foot, slide, tackle, yellow card, who knows. And if you have time to say play, you can play! Okay, you can do those things.
If your
umpire or coach is indicating to you otherwise, please refer them to this section. Because the logic is sound, the data is clear, and if this is a new approach
for you,
I invite you to try it. Prove me wrong. Show me how terrible it is, and how you can't possibly blow the game properly because you have a
whistle in your mouth when the ball's in your circle.
And how
your timing is all messed up and everything's bad, and you can't play advantage, and you can't do those things. Prove it to
me.
If you're interested in trying to improve, I recommend this as an approach, I think you'll love it, and we, as coaches, need to
get up to speed.
The game has changed. I rest my case.
Let's hear what everybody, uh, I can't, look, I can't even, uh, When I saw that in the server, I just kind of
lost my mind.
I'm like, I, can you imagine how many times you would miss your mouth? You can't add another element of things to Florian. When you started umpiring three ago, your umpire manager told you, uh, to have your whistle on your hand down, to have time to think
about what
you do, but this was for new umpires. Okay, I, I can see that. For brand new Umpires,
Umpires,
potentially, but new umpires probably have played the game
And if you're thinking about your decisions, you aren't allowing your hockey instincts to tell you, dang, something's wrong. I would much rather see an umpire. I'm a big fan of arm first and then whistle, but if you're at that beginner stage you're like, yeah, that's, that's wrong, just blow your whistle and then figure it out after.
Because safety first. And your whistle is your tool to govern the game and make sure unsafe things don't happen. Um, you received this advice as late as 2010. We have moved on since then. Um, whistle in your mouth when you need to point in both directions. Probably not. Um, let's see, Simon, a coach complained that, uh, your whistle was in your mouth too long, said your timing was spot on, you might have blown too early. you get told your, your whistle timing's spot on, but do, stop doing the thing that was allowing you to have spot on whistle timing.
Makes sense.
You tried it for the first time, Storm, at the weekend and found it so much easier to make the decisions a little quicker. Love that for you. Absolutely love that.
Tom, can get a
short clip,
uh, video of putting a whistle in your mouth for these umpire coaches? Um, okay. I will make this, it's going to make me really unpopular with a few people. And
ask me whether my bucket of fucks is empty, because it is. So I will do that for you, Tom, because I'm, I'm here for this journey.
Were
you in the bar? Good stuff. All right. Thank you. Um, that has been our skill session for this week.
We've got two, two more segments,
but before we do that, I just want to make very quickly a couple of announcements. Um, to welcome a few, couple people, a few people to the third team. Hey wait,
wait, where's my
where's
where's my thing?
my, my button's not working. Let's do it this way. Welcome, Andrea Taylor, to Green, uh, uh, Alexander Taylor, sorry, it's, stream's to Keely hour, it's like pumpkin's pulled up in front of the, in
front of YouTube, just saying, Keely, your time's up, get in the pumpkin, thank you very much for joining, really glad to you, and Alexander has been availing himself of the watch parties, That is where we hang out and we watch games together so we can learn from a holistic of view.
So as useful as the live streams are for showing and digesting and, and looking at particular clips. If you want understand how a full game gets put together. Uh, by the top umpires in the world, why they're making decisions that they're making, how their decision making is affected by their positioning and all these other sort of bigger issues that are just as important to your
umpire development
that you want to consider joining the FH umpire
third team, which hopefully that is that going to get added to the broadcast.
There's a button
for that. I don't know. But anyway, there's, there's that QR code over there. Um, please do have a look at that and ask, come into the server and ask me any questions about it. In addition to Alexander joining green, we have couple of yellow members as well. And this isn't working either.
Oh my goodness, my buttons!
Walter Good
Dungeon and Emma Hartley,
I am so pleased that you are on board. Uh, Emma is going to be joining us at the EHCO Trophy, which I could be more excited about. And Walter has been an absolute blast. Like, you want to see quality shit posting
in the watch parties, Walter's
got it on lock. So, thank you very much for, for being there and for joining, Yellow.
You lot are awesome. Okay, last couple clips. Hopefully, won't take
too long.
And there is! is!
Ah!
Ah! That's you. A weird bully. I didn't know how else to title this one. This will be interesting. Half the stick goes one way, the other half goes the other. You don't see that often. You don't see that every day. Let's have a look at that again. Let's have a look at that again. Congratulations, Cory. That's awesome. Good to see you.
Hey! That's in! Oh, 10, 10.
short. So, I left the the last part of it, because it's just
like, sometimes you can't win as an umpire, because everything just, one weird thing happens where a stick on a
push pass
Snaps in half.
I mean, obviously it broke earlier and then the push pass just, it happened to be Like, look at the
player's face, it just,
looks down at the stick. So cute. But this the part that I
wanted to sort of,
look at. And this is one of the
reasons I
bullies so much. So much. With the passion of a thousand fiery suns. Uh, Murph? Disconnect your
buzzer.
You are You are not permitted to post anymore.
By the way,
Ah, there you go. Does anybody see anything about this bully that you'd have to, um That is, is a learning point, perhaps?
Yeah, it is, it is amazing.
Let's get to it,
I just want to make sure that we're Somewhat moving in time. Doot, doot, doot, do, do, do, do, do, do.
A bully!
The ball is between one player from each
team who face other with the goal they are defending to
their right. Let's see. I can't get the Come on.
For some reason, I can't do that.
They are not facing the correct way. And I mean, obviously the, the, the Spanish player is reacting to what the Korean player is doing because he's like, well, okay, if I have to do that, he's still mostly facing the correct way. But Korean player does it, the player in red, apologies, does rotate himself.
to such an extent. And the question is why, Alexander, do that? Do they gain advantage? Yeah, they do. They do because it helps them move ball away from their opponent in a way that they can protect it, not obstruct, but they can protect the ball from being tackled and then from being dispossessed more
easily.
And it leads to what happens there.
And obviously, the notion of facing your goal, I
mean, the precise wording in the rule is important. You know, to have here, okay, right, who face each other, so the Spanish player is adjusting to make sure he's still kind of facing his opponent,
With the goal
that they're defending, so it's, I mean, we talk about shoulders, and hips, and something, but really, that isn't defined.
Okay, that's just sort of colloquial, commonly held knowledge, and that it's just about, uh, the goal that you're defending being towards your right. But getting that vagueness out of the way, we're clearly on the
other side of that in this moment.
There you go. Argument for just play on no bully. Yeah, that's another thing, Ian. I think I
would have
played this on anyway, because there's no
What you have,
it's, difficult because you
have a player who now cannot participate
in game because they don't have a stick that agrees the specifications and players must hold a stick.
But in the era of
rolling substitutions, there's no reason why this player can't, and, and I've obviously edited out the segment where he goes to the bench and, you know, his manager passes him his stick. you know, his backup stick. And he goes back on pitch and he's looking at this one make sure it's not broken sort of
thing,
Right? So Um, but you can, you can argue that there's a lot of call to just play that on because bullies suck.
And so that's the question
is if you get into this sort situation, what do you do in this moment? Now, this is, this kind of really similar to what we had in the very first clip in terms of the amount. of weird and difficult decisions that an umpire has to
make in a moment. And this
is something that we can take forward is, when something really weird happens, like a stick breaking, how do we get ourselves into the mental head space so that we can keep, we can get back sharp and moving into The future, moving into the next pace, because I can guarantee that Tom will sit in there going, I can't believe that guy's stick broke, while while
the bully is happening,
Because his feet are still, he's not where he needs to be on that play, he gets caught. Everything's fine, he makes the right decision on the breakdown, which is clearly the most important decision be made in all of that. But the distraction of the little things, how do you get yourself back? How do you get yourself making the decisions that you're going to make?
99, 000 times out of a hundred thousand times properly. And
that involves what we talked about last week,
right? Is reading what's going to happen next. What's to happen next. Oh, I
need to move.
You know, and all the other things that we talked about. Um, Simon, you gave a bully in a junior game, they said you had to stand there.
You stand here, tap sticks over the box, set, yeah. Definitely coach you, need to be done. And, I mean, we've all had to do that, is instruct people who haven't done bullies, And that's why I hate them. Either they need to be all the time in the game so that players get practice at executing them, or never. Because weird shit happens when bullies get called. Umpires have to make weird decisions that they have very little practice at doing. And technical things happen. And it's just, it's ugly. It's,
it's dumb. So either
we have bullies all the time, or we have none.
And, uh, Mikey had a
bully down to 16 indoors, so it being the players that So the players did a three tap bully because they had been taught improperly.
That's very frustrating.
Okay, um, we'll take a quick look at the poll, just to see. Proactive management, excellent, and that's just the I just wanted to lead you
into that thinking that that is the option that you want
to going with is get in there early if you possibly can and then reset yourself.
You've got them set up properly now, don't just start time, get yourself where you need to be for the next evolving play. Your colleague. In mission critical positioning should be the one who's making sure they've now got that back side play for you as the controlling umpire and you're down the
pitch. So the yellow card
was not for the bully dance, for the failed breakdown by number 13. Yeah, that was absolutely the
case.
Um, let's see, Simon, if other equipment breaks, like the ball, you've heard of this
happen where
splits in two. It does happen. Ask me how I know. Winter Calgary, is that
also a bully, even if possession is clear before the issue. But you can't continue play because you don't have a ball to the specifications.
So you would have to call a bully in that one.
Red card Korea and said, that must've been a wild bully. Uh, there you go. Okay. Last one. Interfering with the stick. I wanted to pull this one out. Not because there's that much a question, although I did put up a pull option. But I just want to show you something that you don't catch on camera very often. So
the decision's been made for a penalty corner and a yellow card's been awarded by Gareth.
And, And, you can see Gareth's like, Okay, fine. Let's go to a, let's go a team referral. It's not a corner, but you can't listen. It's late in the game though. Their referral, it's a minute 10 left with Q in Q4,
and this happens.
Absolutely nailed on. They're having a scrap on the edge of the circle. I mean that, that replay, yeah, that's, that's a good call. It shows that he's got his arms up around this place in a situation where you don't want to stop. or, or, or run had clear possession ball come Untestable.
Sorry. Thank you, from my guy, I didn't, I guess I didn't guess I didn't get the
the vibe
of what Simon's questions about. about. Um, that's that's super old school, Luke. We used to do roll ins from the sideline. Can you imagine the chaos? Yeah, let's have lots more 50 50 collisions, wouldn't that be fun? Okay. So the reason I pulled this one out is because of the off ball conduct and just to make sure we go through the steps.
Okay, so let's establish the facts of what we see here is that the ball has not, is, is
out
near the sideline ish. It's definitely outside the circle here, or sorry, it's, yeah, so it's gone to
that point
and this is what we've got is right here. The defender has grabbed
the player's stick
who he's marking. Intentional foul. What is the correct remedy for an intentional foul that occurs? Inside the circle against a player who does not have likely possession or possession of ball. They are inside the circle, are they
not?
Pretty much. Close enough. It could also be an intentional foul outside the circle. There no requirement when the ball is outside the circle for a player to have or not have possession of the
ball.
Okay? Those are two Things that you've got two different ball ball placements,
but the same team penalty decision. And that is the way the rules are designed because otherwise we can get into situations where very, very big goal scoring opportunities are given for very not big goal scoring opportunities. We have the personal penalties to redress those, that, that degree of impact instead. Um, let's see. I mean,
I don't know,
Or good defending. Look, they're going to, defenders are going do what they need to do, right? But what I really appreciate is the fact Gareth saw it. Yes, it's right under his nose, so you can say, oh, well, of
course he's going to see it, but
the ball's over there
and
he's looking at this right,
you know, is
he splitting his eyes or he have really good peripheral view?
Is he watching for these contests between? Players who are off the ball because of what's been going on in the rest of the game, by the way, everything had been going on for the rest of the
game.
which they definitely saw. Okay. So just, but really excellent awareness and understanding, decisive, uh, decisive decisions, decisive action, knowing what he needed to do right in that moment, because he was anticipating if this happens, this is what I'm going to have to do. The penalty corner is super right.
Although
the penalty stroke was intentional, uh, Rupert, you were umpiring with Bruce Bale once and a player did this, He said, I know a nice stick, but it's not yours. Oh, that's very cute. Um, let's see.
So I'm glad
we're all on the same page on that. I don't know if anybody had time vote in the poll, but I'll have a quick look just in case I saw no. Or a hundred percent of said PC and, um,
did I say green both times?
I did, but you guys are so smart. You knew I made a typo and that it's
supposed to be a PC and a
yellow card. I know, I know. It's like, how do you,
do you really,
you know, you did it and it
was player who did it, who came back and said, no, no, no, we gotta review this.
And then
even though it was reviewed and it was upheld, and then he tried to come back on the pitch. It's like, no, no. No. And there was a bit of a comment from, um, mace Mace there about whether on review,
let's say mysteriously, the decision gets overturned.
does that overturn the card?
And the answer is no, but an umpire can change their mind, right? So the umpire could elect to overturn card. If they have been mistaken as to actual facts of the situation, I would expect them to. Have I ever seen this happen? With video referral in an international match, watching between three four hundred matches a year for the last five years?
No, I haven't seen it happen. Is it gonna now that I've said that out loud? Absolutely!
It is
absolutely gonna happen. Uh, was 18 the first to ask for the review of So He's Been Carded? What is he doing and getting involved in game? Uh, I mean, he's I'm not super mad at that. It's just hilarious that he did. That's all. Uh, there you go. Okay. We are heading into the server. We're gonna watch a game.
And, uh, I don't know which game it is. I
didn't see any comments. As to what you wanted see,
I will
figure it out quickly. I do have, um, I have a couple of, ideas. So if y'all head into the lounge, I'll check in there while I'm just picking the game and then we'll go into special at all access Watch Party channel to do that.
If you're not interested in watching the game, you stay in the lounge and hang out with, uh, any other friends that are there. But, uh, that's what we will do. Next week. We will, that's good because you don't
have control. I'm just kidding.
You can watch anything you want on your end, of course, because.
You have watch.hockey and you are watching games. So, uh, next week we are going to do more work on the Olympic qualifiers. They all end on Saturday or Sunday. So all that action is, and there are things that happened today, things that happened yesterday that people are very in hearing about. Uh, the New Zealand USA there was. Uh, one incident that was a video, a self referral of a video review that we're to talk about next week.
There was an interesting one in Spain Egypt game this morning that is definitely going to be on the list. If you see things because you're watching the games, because all of bought the package, all of you bought the package, and you're watching because you're supporting the sport, um, Let me know things that you've seen that you think need to be reviewed and are worthy of conversation.
You see things on the socials, let me know because there's only so much socials I can social in aday because I'm watching a lot of hockey with y'all. Thank you more for coming. Bye! Good to have you. And Graham, you're very welcome. Yes, it'll be a green room issue.
