Hi Keely. I am a dad of three girls and we are all new to hockey. Please can you help me understand the following in terms of the rules: my one daughter’s team was in an 8 seconds shoot out and the goalkeeper from the opposing team fouled two of the 8 second shooters (she pushed the shooters down). The umpire correctly gave two penalty strokes however we want to know if the goalkeeper should not have been sent off when the second offense happened as this showed intention by the keeper to foul and to not attempt to save the shot? Hi Jeremy, it’s very hard to say from your description whether a personal penalty was warranted. The penalty stroke has already been given because the foul is intentional, so that’s not the sole criterion. In a shoot-out, we’d then look at whether the foul has an extra physical or dangerous component, which we balance against the privileges goalkeepers have within their circle and the expectation of their body being legitimately in play to stop the ball, particularly while they’re supine. We’d then look at repetition of the offence and whether a person message is needed to prevent future occurrences and keep that player from further breaking down the play.
