This passage of play shows good cooperation and a fluid approach to trading off of responsibilities between the controlling and supporting umpire. The first foot foul occurs in the “Bermuda Triangle” area in and around the circle on the far side from the controlling umpire, where his view is blocked by a number of bodies. A second foot occurs immediately after even more centrally, but this is also handled by the support who has a far better view of the ball hitting the defenders who are facing him. This support also allows the control to focus on players closer to his goal and reading ahead in the play in his circle, rather than trying to fight through the maze of legs to see minor infractions. Note the proactive communication coming from the supporting umpire regarding ball placement, which not only prepares the players but also his colleague as to how the play should unfold from each free hit awarded.

The key is that in this set of circumstances, where the players were moving and how the play unfolded, this hand-off was very effective. In the same match, the ball could be in the same spot and the responsibilities may not need to be shifted in the same way at all. This is why cute diagrams drawing lines down the pitch are only a rough guide and should be wholly disregarded when the circumstances suit. A thorough pre-match chat and good communication, whether via radios or by non-verbals (i.e. eye contact and gestures), along with a shared understanding of when each umpire will have a better view of the play, allows this teamwork to be smooth and effective.
